Collect, check, clean, build views over the database, then assemble the tables in Excel pivot tables — every year, largely by hand, by the one person who knows how. The published layout is what you build: nested headers, merged cells and totals, plus what each cell counts and what it leaves out. A yearbook is normally produced strictly in order. Collect the data. Run the entry checks. Clean it. Then build database views on top of it, and only then start assembling the tables — in practice, in Excel pivot tables. The checking and cleaning still have to happen — that is about data quality, and nothing removes it. When the data is in, a single refresh repopulates every table in the project. Where the volume comes fromD’où vient le volume
We counted, on the two most recent editions of the national education yearbook of Cameroon. In the chapters that carry most of the book, 94 then 97 statistical tables rest on sixteen shapes. The same sixteen in both editions: moving from one year to the next needed no new shape at all. Across the whole book, 31 shapes account for its 127 statistical tables. What looks like a hundred tables to design is a few dozen to design, and the rest to repeat, region by region and sub-sector by sub-sector.Nous avons compté, sur les deux dernières éditions de l’annuaire national de l’éducation du Cameroun. Dans les chapitres qui portent l’essentiel de l’ouvrage, 94 puis 97 tableaux statistiques reposent sur seize formes. Les mêmes seize dans les deux éditions : passer d’une année à l’autre n’a demandé aucune forme nouvelle. Sur l’ouvrage entier, 31 formes rendent compte de ses 127 tableaux statistiques. Ce qui ressemble à cent tableaux à concevoir, c’est quelques dizaines à concevoir et le reste à répéter, région par région et sous-secteur par sous-secteur.
That is one yearbook, in one country, in one sector, and the proportion will be different elsewhere. The shape of the finding will not: the volume of a statistical publication comes from repetition, and repetition done by hand is where the year, and the errors, go.C’est un annuaire, dans un pays, dans un secteur, et la proportion sera différente ailleurs. So a table here is not only something you build. It is something you repeat, in one action, on any table you already have. Choose the variables to repeat it over, whether region, year, sub-sector or level, and compose the groups of values each one takes: one region per table, or the Anglophone regions together as a single group. The set of tables that would come out is on screen while you compose it, and nothing is written until you ask for it.Ici, un tableau n’est donc pas seulement quelque chose que l’on construit. Cross two variables, ten regions by three levels, and the preview is a grid rather than a list of thirty lines: each cell shows the table that would be produced and the name it would carry. Each one carries the parent's structure, labels, scope rules and styling identically — only the pinned values differ. Correct the parent, regenerate, and every untouched table takes the correction. If someone adjusted one of the generated tables afterwards, a regeneration leaves it alone and says so, rather than quietly restoring the parent's version over their work. A table that is merely late, untouched but older than its parent, is reported differently: there, regenerating is the safe move.Si quelqu’un a ajusté ensuite l’un des tableaux engendrés, une régénération le laisse tel quel et le signale, au lieu de rétablir en silence la version du parent par-dessus son travail. Repeating over a variable the table does not actually filter on would produce the same table over and over; a group holding several values needs a filter that accepts several. A table whose only job is to spawn the others can be marked as such: it never goes to the database for figures of its own, neither when it is saved nor during a project-wide refresh. Every answer is labelled grounded, not found or needs clarification, with a confidence level.
